Knoxville, TN – March 13, 2014 – Smithfield and Food City are partnering to help feed local Knoxville-area families by donating 80,000 pounds of protein to the Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee. The joint effort is part of Smithfield’s Helping Hungry Homes program.

During a June 2002 White House meeting, President Bush met with corporate leaders from organizations across the nation and key White House staff members to discuss objectives for his Businesses Strengthening America volunteerism campaign. Steve Smith, Food City president and chief executive officer was among the select group.

Through a partnership with local farmers, the supermarket chain is able to bring their customers fresh-from-the-field fruits and vegetables. Many items are delivered directly from the farm to the store on the same day they are picked. What began over ten years ago, with a small number of items supplied by a handful of area farmers has now grown into a multi-million dollar operation. Food City currently buys over $5,000,000 in fresh produce from local growers annually.
