Smithfield & Food City Donate 80,000 Pounds of Food to Local Food Banks

Bristol, TN – March 14, 2014 – In celebration of the upcoming race weekend in Bristol, Smithfield and Food City are partnering to donate 40,000 pounds of protein each to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee and Feeding America Southwest Virginia, for a combined total donation of 80,000 pounds to two local food banks serving the Bristol community.

This significant donation in Bristol is part of Smithfield’s Helping Hungry Homes tour, the company’s coast-to-coast effort to help families and individuals become more food secure.

Representatives from Smithfield and Food City will present the donation to Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee and Feeding America Southwest Virginia on Friday, March 14th at 6:00 PM during the Food City Race Night at Bristol Motor Speedway, located at 151 Speedway Blvd, Bristol, TN.

“Food City has a long history of community involvement and support of our local food banks, so it’s a privilege to participate in these substantial protein donations alongside Smithfield,” said Steven C. Smith, Food City President and CEO.

“Smithfield has made more than 180 donations across the country under the company’s Helping Hungry Homes program. Through this donation, we will provide more than 320,000 servings of protein to the Bristol area,” said Dennis Pittman, Smithfield Director of Corporate Communications and Public Affairs. “So many race fans are loyal customers of Smithfield and Food City. As the sponsor of the No. 43 Richard Petty Motorsports race team with driver Aric Almirola, it’s important for us to give back to communities that support us, and our race team, throughout the year. We’re proud to partner with Food City to make this substantial donation to benefit families in Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia.”
