ABINGDON, VA (Thursday, July 28, 2011) – Earlier today, Food City officials announced plans to begin purchasing their eggs locally from Abingdon based Dutt & Wagner. The joint venture will result in job creation and a $6 million boost to the local economy.
“Food City is a locally owned and operated company and we make every effort to buy locally whenever possible,” said Steven C. Smith, Food City President and Chief Executive Officer. “Buying local is the logical choice. It provides our customers with the freshest possible product, while lending additional support to our local economies.”
Food City and Dutt & Wagner are long-time partners, with the retailer having purchased select egg products and hens from Dutt & Wagner for a number of years. “We have always enjoyed a great working relationship with the Wagner Family, Kenny Hobbs and his folks and we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to take our partnership to the next level,” said Smith.
Production is scheduled to begin immediately and will include the company’s three main labels, Food City, ValuTime and Full Circle, resulting in 11 available product varieties and accounting for about 90-95% of their total egg sales.
“Our local farms are known for producing some of the finest products in the country and we’re excited to have the opportunity to provide Food City shoppers with a top quality product at the peak of freshness. The eggs will be packed one day and arrive at the Food City Distribution Center the following day. It just doesn’t get any fresher than that,” said Kenny Hobbs, Dutt & Wagner General Manager.
