There’s something nostalgic and nourishing about a well-packed picnic. Whether you’re heading to the beach, park, or your backyard, a little preparation goes a long way in creating a tasty outdoor spread.
Prioritize Food Safety
Start with the basics: keep cold foods cold and hot foods hot. Use insulated bags, ice packs, or frozen water bottles to maintain safe temperatures. Frozen water bottles do double duty; they keep items cold and provide hydration later. Don’t let perishable foods sit out for more than two hours or just one hour if it’s 90 degrees or hotter.
Build a Balanced Menu
Aim to include a mix of carbohydrates, protein, fiber, and healthy fats. Sandwiches or wraps with lean proteins, whole grain bread or wrap, and plenty of vegetables.
• California Turkey and Avocado Wraps: Packed with protein, heart-healthy fat, and fiber.
• Tuscan Quinoa Chickpea Salad: Quinoa provides complete plant protein and magnesium, while the chickpeas add fiber, folate, and iron. Grain salads, like quinoa with chickpeas and roasted veggies, are hearty and hold up well without refrigeration.
• Chunky Egg Salad: Egg salad, whole grain crackers and veggies: A portable source of high-quality protein, B vitamins, and choline for brain health.
Fresh and Portable
Fresh produce adds color, crunch, and essential nutrients like vitamin A, potassium, and antioxidants. Baby carrots, cherry tomatoes, cucumber slices, and sugar snap peas are easy to prep and pack. Whole fruits like apples, oranges, and grapes are portable and don’t bruise easily. If you want to skip the prep all together, Food City fruit and vegetable trays or snack cups are the way to go.
Add a Flavor Twist
Elevate your picnic with a pop of flavor. Add herbed spreads, tangy pickles, marinated olives, or small pieces of mozzarella cheese. These additions can turn basic items like crackers or sandwiches into something special without much extra effort.
Pack Smart Snacks
Nuts, whole grain crackers, or roasted chickpeas make shelf-stable options. Choose snacks that won’t melt, spoil, or get crushed during transport. Pick up a variety of Food City snack packs; balanced with veggies, fruits, nuts, hummus, peanut butter, and other options - Deli Fresh Turkey and Cheddar Snack Pack , Snack Packs.
Hydrate Wisely
Skip the sugary drinks and bring plenty of water. Infuse it with citrus slices or mint for a refreshing twist. If you’re planning to be active, a low-sugar electrolyte drink may be helpful.
Keep It Simple
Picnics aren’t about perfection! They’re about enjoying food and nature together. Choose recipes and foods that travel well, require minimal prep, and don’t stress if everything isn’t homemade. A relaxed attitude is one of the healthiest ingredients you can bring.
