March is National Nutrition Month®, an annual campaign created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics that encourages people to make more informed food choices and develop healthy eating and physical activity habits. Celebrate National Nutrition Month by discovering the power of nutrition with these simple tips.

Add More Nutrient-Dense Foods to Your Cart with Pick Well

Making meals count starts with building a plate around nutrient-dense foods. Nutrient density refers to the amount of beneficial nutrients a food provides relative to its calories. These nutrients – including protein, fiber, healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals – help support your body’s overall health and daily function.

An easy way to identify nutritious foods at Food City is with the Pick Well program. Products labeled with Pick Well tags such as Dietitian’s Pick, Heart Healthy, and Good Source of Fiber offer high nutritional value in every serving.

Choose A Variety of Foods from All Food Groups

In addition to focusing on nutrient density, aim for variety.  Including foods from all food groups helps ensure nutritional adequacy and supports long-term health.

Rather than following fad diets that eliminate entire food groups, focus on sustainable eating patterns you can maintain for life. This means enjoying foods you love while including plenty of fruits, vegetables, grains, protein-rich foods and healthy fats – along with portion-appropriate treats that keep you satisfied.

Talk with a Registered Dietitian

Making more informed food choices means learning to distinguish trends from evidence-based guidance. A Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) is a credentialed nutrition professional that can offer expert, science-backed insights.

Registered Dietitians must complete education and training requirements, including earning at least a bachelor’s degree from an accredited dietetics program, completing a dietetic internship with a minimum of 900 supervised practice hours, passing the national registration exam, and completing continuing education to maintain this credential. They can assist with meal planning and provide personalized nutrition recommendations tailored to individual needs.
