Abingdon, VA . - Thursday, Apr 23, 2026.

Food City’s partnership with local growers provides their customers fresh-from-the-farm fruits and vegetables, many of which are delivered the same day they’re picked. The company purchases nearly $5 million in locally grown produce annually.

“We have always prided ourselves in selecting top quality products for our customers,” says Steven C. Smith, Food City president and chief executive officer. “Our local farms are known for producing some of the finest crops in the country. Buying local is the logical choice. It provides our customers with the freshest produce possible, while supporting our local economies,” adds Smith.

Food City purchases produce from a number of local farms, including those in Grainger, Blount, Cocke, and Sullivan counties in Tennessee; Scott, Carroll, Grayson, and Washington counties in Virginia; Shelby County in Alabama; and Cherokee County in North Carolina.

“Food City is proud to partner with local farms across our market area and serve as the exclusive retail outlet for many of them,” says Joe Greene, Food City vice president of produce operations.

Locally grown strawberries will be among the first crops available in participating locations. These ripe, ready-to-eat strawberries are delivered directly to Food City, while supplies last.
