A top tip for improving and maintaining health is to fill at least half of your plate with fruits and vegetables. During the summer months, fresh seasonal options abound, making it easy to get plenty of produce in, including local produce. Locally sourced produce offers robust flavor and supports local farmers. Food City has reimagined the classic farmers market model and partners to bring local goods directly to stores through the Local Growers program.

Locally grown fruits and vegetables are picked at the height of season and delivered directly to stores, in many instances the day they were picked. The Local Growers program at Food City features produce from counties in Tennessee and Virginia. Here are a few favorite produce picks you’ll find as part of Food City local growers.

Grainger County Tomatoes

One delicacy of the summer that our Local Growers provide is Grainger County Tomatoes. These are known for their distinctively sweet flavor, which is attributed to the limestone-rich soil in which they’re grown. Some great ways to highlight their features are with simple salads or bruschetta. Simply chop tomatoes and toss with chopped fresh basil, minced garlic, salt, pepper and a drizzle of olive oil. For a fun twist, try topping a whole wheat flatbread with ricotta cheese and mozzarella, and spoon the bruschetta on top for a fresh, flavorful summer weeknight meal!

Cucumbers

Another item you’ll often see sourced locally is cucumbers. These staples of the season are rich in water, vitamin K, and offer electrolytes to help with hydration during the hot months of summer. Try slicing and adding to infused waters with herbs; peel and slice for dipping, or feature in salads. An elevated way to enjoy is with with smoked salmon, dill and goat cheese.

Green Bell Peppers

Another veggie superstar of the summer is bell peppers. Crisp and packed with vitamin C, these versatile veggies can add zesty crunch to any meal. If you’re looking for something packed with protein and want a way to sneak in more veggies, try green bell pepper boats with tuna or chicken salad. Simply slice your bell peppers in half and remove seeds, then add a scoop of your favorite salad from the Food City deli, and garnish with fresh tarragon or dill for a pop of color.
