Earlier today, the Abingdon, VA based Food City Distribution Center donated a retired diesel semi-truck to Virginia Highlands Community College in Abingdon, VA.    

“We are excited to have the opportunity to assist our local community college in increasing their educational offerings to benefit our area students and the community as a whole,” says Steven C. Smith, Food City president and chief executive officer.

The 2013 diesel semi-truck was recently retired from Food City’s transportation fleet and will be utilized in the college’s diesel mechanic certification program.   

“There is a great need and demand for qualified diesel mechanics in our area,” says Buddy Honaker, director of distribution for the Food City Distribution Center.  “We are proud to partner with Virginia Highlands Community College to help facilitate this much-needed training curriculum.”

The Food City Distribution Center, which employs approximately 715 associates has hired a number of graduates from the college’s diesel mechanics certification program.  Food City’s fleet currently consists of more than 162 drivers and over 96 tractors and 466 trailers.  The team is responsible for transporting in excess of 814 loads weekly or 42,354 loads annually to their retail chain of supermarkets.
