About Far Southwest Virginia: A Postcard and Photographic Journey

A few years ago, Frank Kilgore and Kathy Shearer published Far Southwest Virginia: A Postcard Journey. Approximately 5,000 copies were sold in two printings. Since then, Kilgore has continued to gather additional postcards, old photos, letterheads, and vintage newspaper items for a larger version which includes the counties of Buchanan, Dickenson, Lee, Russell, Scott, Tazewell, Washington, Wise, and the city of Norton.

This new book of old stuff is in a much larger format than the original. Far Southwest Virginia: A Postcard and Photographic Journey comes in at 320 pages and over 1,000 images, many of them in full color. Everything is in an easily readable layout with descriptive captions and much less text than most history books.

The result is a fascinating collection of coal camps, lumber camps, small towns, farming communities, railroad trains, and more. Coal scrip, Confederate-era county money, historic newspaper stories, and a few feature stories round out the publication.

Frank Kilgore is also the publisher of watershed textbooks about the Clinch River, Big Sandy River, an upcoming textbook covering the Clinch, Powell, and Holston rivers, and Mountain Peeks Magazine.

The book was officially published on November 6, 2014. You can purchase copies at participating Food City locations for yourself or as gifts for friends and family, especially folks who have moved away and would enjoy this historical tour through their hometowns.
